One of the big reasons why I built this site is because along with a lot of people, I don't possess an encyclopaedic knowledge of the pro's and con's of each and every ship in Pirates of the Burning Sea.
A really great thing about the game is that there are almost 200 ships (including variants) for you to sail, and although they can be handily divided off into classes such as Merchants, Warships and Scouts - they each handle that little bit differently, giving them uses in some situations while they fare less well in others.
For the most part, once you've got the hang of PvE in Pirates, any well outfitted ship appropriate to the level of the opponent should suffice to blow them all to smithereens, you just have to adapt your tactics accordingly. When it comes to PvP however, some of the opponents you'll face are a sight tougher than the NPC opponents you're used to.
What you need then, is a way to compare ships - so that you can learn which ones suit your own personal fighting style, or which will compliment your group mates, or whether you think you might have the power to engage that target of opportunity you just saw obliviously sailing through the red zone.
So thats why i've built the Ship Comparison Tool - which at the moment, is the main reason that the PotBS companion site exists at all.
There are two parts the ship tool - called the shipyard, on the site. The first is a sortable and filterable list. This is a great way of finding your next ship, or quickly comparing a number of ships against each other in a certain area - while you can compare pretty much any stat, they don't all fit on the one display - so you need to specify what you want to look at.
A set of options at the top of the screen allow you to filter out a ship or subset of ships by name (useful if you want to compare all the variants of a given ship type, for instance). You can also filter ships by many other things; such as the variant, the size, the level range, the classes allowed to sail it, and so on. The bottom control is the sort order, where you can select upto three stats to sort on, in any order.
When you click the 'update' button; the list below the box will show you the ships you selected; and all the stats in the subset that you picked. If you sorted your ships by something specific, then this might be a handy way to reference say - which ship out of the selection has the best armour, or DPS, or highest number of cannons.
If you want to see all the stats of a given ship together, click on the name of the ship which will take you to the in-depth comparison screen. Every stat in the game (and a few that are worked out based on the others) is presented here, in groups. A drop down menu at the top allows you to pick one other ship to directly compare against, and the resulting page will show you how the ships stack up against each other, so you can see whether you need to be running, shooting at long range, or rageboarding your opponent!
The ship comparison tool is a community project - MMO's are constantly rebalanced and PotBS is not excluded from that. If you notice that a ship has incorrect stats, simply log in to the site (creating an account is quick, and costs nothing) - If you access the ship list while you're logged in, you'll have the chance to edit the statistics of any given ship. Your help in this regard is truly appreciated.
Thanks for reading, and let me know what you think.
